Bridal
Garters are considered to be the oldest surviving wedding tradition. In medieval times family and guest accompanied the bridal couple to the marriage bed . . .
This eventually drew objection and instead wedding guests would try to grab the bride's garter for good luck. Fearing bodily harm, the French modified the tradition and brides began throwing their garters - whoever caught it could expect good luck.
This tradition continues today in the United States where the groom removes the bride's garter and throws it to the unmarried men. The fortunate man who ends up with the garter in his hands is said to be the next to marry.
